Lodge at 2,410m · Carpathian Ridge · No Road Since 1998

Games hewn
from the ridge.

HEWNMOTE is a mountain hermitage studio. We build games the way we cut beams — slow, by hand, with the grain. The lodge has no highway, one satellite dish on a pulley, and a woodstore that decides our deadlines. Winter is our editor. Silence is our engine.

What We Carve Here

I
Winter Store

The Snow Axe

A solitary survival tale told across one long night. You fell trees, split firewood, and keep a single hearth alive while the wind tries the door. There are no enemies. There is only the cold, the axe, and the question of whether you cut enough before dusk. Most players don't.

Spring Thaw

Meltwater

A game about boundaries dissolving. The snowline retreats and reveals what the winter buried — fences, old paths, a child's sled. You walk the contour where ice becomes grass and decide what to rebuild. The map is generated from real elevation data of our own ridge.

Autumn Fell

The Beam Yard

A construction sim without cranes. You choose a tree, score it, fell it uphill, and drag it to the yard with horses. Every beam is numbered, every joint mortised by hand. The final structure is whatever you earned. One hermit took three seasons to raise a toolshed. We shipped it.

Threshold Bell

Our longest glade. A quiet ritual game where you tend a mountain chapel's bell rope, ring for passers-by, and log who climbs and who turns back. Based on the actual visitor book from the ridge shrine 400 meters above us. Some entries are from 1903.

The Hermitage

HEWNMOTE lives in a two-story lodge of larch and slate raised in 1998 on the Carpathian ridge line at 2,410 meters. Four of us stay through the snow season. The road washed out in '98 and we never rebuilt it — supplies come by mule from the valley, or not at all. The dish on the pulley brings email when the wind allows.

We don't ship on dates. We clear glades. A game is ready when the woodstore is full, the roof doesn't leak, and the hermit who started it can still remember why. Sometimes that's eleven months. Sometimes it's four years. The mountain doesn't negotiate.

Our tools are half digital, half forged. We model in the mornings, chop in the afternoons, and read aloud by the hearth at night. The lodge has one rule older than the studio: nothing leaves the ridge that wasn't made on the ridge. We've bent it twice. Both times we regretted it.

Those Who Stay

Miron Brânzoi

Master Hewner

Raised the lodge. Can read a tree's fall line by smell. Wrote The Snow Axe in one winter without touching a keyboard — dictated it to a recorder between axe strokes. Sleeps on a bench by the hearth. Says the cold keeps the logic honest.

Thresholds & Ritual

Tends the chapel bell and the visitor book. Maps every path the snow reveals. Her games are quiet to the point of disappearance — one reviewer called Threshold Bell "a screensaver with grief." She took it as praise. Keeps a jar of meltwater from 2004.

Beam & Structure

The only one who likes the digital half. Models joints in CAD, then rebuilds them by hand to check the math. Spent a season proving a 14th-century mortise technique in Unity. The result became The Beam Yard. Refuses to texture anything that isn't bark he scraped himself.
